01

It is a cold night, and I am dispirited.

02

It is a long road, and a weary foot.

03

There is darkness, and a dead lamp.

04

Alone, I pass along the road:

05

people have stayed far from me.

06

A shadow passed over the wall,

07

and added a sorrow to my sorrows.

08

The thought of darkness and these ruins

09

came unawares, to join my heart

10

in secretly making tales.

11

There is no color to tell me:

12

a little patience, dawn is near.

13

At every moment I raise this cry from my heart:

14

alas, how dark this night is!

15

Where is a laugh to stir within my heart?

16

Where is a drop to pour into the sea?

17

Where is a rock to which I can cling?

18

It is as though the night were damp.

19

Others, too, have sorrow in their hearts,

20

but my sorrow is a damp sorrow.
