THE DEATH OF COLOR · POEM 9 OF 22
English translation draft, awaiting review.
01My eye wore out its feet upon the distant road,
02until at last it accepted my words: that life
03was the color of fancy on the face of a dream's image.
04I entrusted my heart to separation's pain, but to what end?
05The end of my evening of complaint
06was a morning of rebuke.
07My eye found no refreshment in this life of many defeats:
08this house's foundations rested wholly upon water.
09The desert's thorns have pierced my feet.
10I have trodden the road only with a dry throat.
11Yet if someone, by way of helping,
12took my hand, it was the mirage's deception.
13The world's beauty never took on a lasting color:
14the night of my suffering held slowness in its heart,
15but the day of my joy made haste in its work.
16My flourishing place grew weary of decay's company.
17The cry of gladness faded in my heart, for from the first
18an owl's image had adorned the body of these ruins.
