THE DEATH OF COLOR · POEM 15 OF 22
English translation draft, awaiting review.
01Night's wound was turning blue.
02In the wilderness where I was,
03no bird's feather brushed the clear air,
04nor did my footsteps, as on other nights,
05add blow upon blow.
06To build a stubborn, steadfast wall around myself,
07from a distant road I brought with me,
08barefoot, hard and heavy stones.
09I built a tall, heavy wall to hide
10from my gaze whatever comes before lowly eyes,
11and close the way against the assault of giants
12whose bodies my imagination clothed in being's color.
13Days and nights passed.
14I stayed on this side, having washed my hands of my work.
15Neither did regret send a pleasant longing through my veins,
16nor did the thought of bygone things torment me.
17But my fancy, behind the wall,
18stirred up dark images,
19and in the color of smoke
20cast designs of demons.
21Until one night, silent like other nights,
22the wall's body fell without a sound:
23a regret mingled with astonishment.
