01

On a dark night,

02

when no sound mingled with another,

03

and no one saw anyone even from nearby,

04

someone climbed the mountain's rocks,

05

and with bloodied fingernails

06

carved an image upon a stone; no one ever saw him again.

07

Rain has washed away the blood's color that welled from his wounded body and on the rocks

08

dried.

09

The storm has swept away the traces

10

left by the soles of his feet.

11

Whomever you ask for a sign of him,

12

his voice will not rise again.

13

That night,

14

no one came along the road

15

to bring news of the color that was beginning to blossom.

16

The mountain: heavy, bewildered, impassive.

17

The wind was coming, but silently.

18

The cloud was flying, but calmly.

19

Yet at the moment when the fingernails of the hand acquainted with mystery

20

moved to begin carving upon a slab of stone,

21

thunder roared,

22

and shook the mountain.

23

Lightning lit the stone upon which, in a brief moment, was carved

24

the body of an image that must remain forever.

25

Tonight,

امشب

26

wind and rain both beat:

27

the wind wishes to wrench a stone from its place,

28

and the rain, too,

29

wishes to wash an image from that stone.

30

Both strive.

31

They roar.

32

But the stone, undaunted upon the mountain's crest,

33

remains firmly in place, as though a steel chain

34

had not been worn away by their years.

35

The effort of everything is in vain.

36

Even if the mountain writhes upon itself,

37

the stone remains in place, still impassive,

38

and that image does not wear away, carved upon it in a narrow opportunity

39

by someone who climbed the mountain's rocks

40

on a dark night.
