THE DEATH OF COLOR · POEM 22 OF 22
English translation draft, awaiting review.
01I suck at the breast of night,
02and seeking a color whose body is unstained by enchantment,
03I probe its ash-filled eye with my own gaze.
04For a long time, seeking my destruction,
05this shameless witch pours poison into her own veins
06to taint the milk with it.
07Then, so that my thought loses the trail of hers,
08she treats me gently.
09But how heedless she is!
10How fruitless her schemes!
11My pulse laughs at her fancy every moment.
12She does not know that it has grown,
13my abundant being, in the swamp of poison,
14and does not know that in poison I wash
15the body of every tear, every laugh.
16In poison's dampness the worm of my thought lives.
17In poison's earth grows the bitter plant of my poetry.
