English translation draft, awaiting review.
01Let us not muddy the water:
02downstream, it seems, a dove is drinking,
03or in the distant thicket a goldfinch washes its feathers,
04or in the village a jug is being filled.
05Let us not muddy the water:
06perhaps this running water goes to a poplar's foot to wash away a heart's sorrow.
07Perhaps a dervish's hand has dipped dry bread into the water.
08A beautiful woman came to the river's edge.
09Let us not muddy the water:
10the beautiful face has doubled.
11How pleasant this water!
12How clear this river!
13The people upstream, what purity they have!
14May their springs bubble, their cows pour milk!
15I have not seen their village.
16Surely, beside their hedges lie God's footprints.
17Moonlight there brightens the breadth of speech.
18Surely, in the upstream village, the low walls are short.
19Its people know what kind of flower the poppy is.
20Surely, there, blue is blue.
21A bud opens; the villagers know.
22What a village it must be!
23May its garden lane be full of music!
24The people at the river's source understand water.
25They did not muddy it; we too
26must not muddy the water.
