THE GREEN EXPANSE · POEM 6 OF 25
English translation draft, awaiting review.
01What broad plains!
02What tall mountains!
03What a smell of grass came through Golestaneh!
04In this village I was looking for something:
05perhaps for a dream,
06for a light, a pebble, a smile.
07Behind the poplars,
08there was a pure heedlessness calling me.
09I stayed beside a reed-bed. The wind came. I listened:
10who was speaking to me?
11A lizard slipped.
13An alfalfa field along the road.
14Then a cucumber patch, safflower bushes,
15and the earth's forgetfulness.
17I took off my woven shoes and sat, my feet in the water:
18‘How green I am today,
19and how alert my body is!
20May no sorrow arrive from behind the mountain.
21Who is behind the trees?
22No one; a cow grazes in the field.
23It is summer noon.
24The shadows know what a summer it is.
25Shadows without a stain,
26a corner bright and pure.
27Children of feeling! Here is the place to play.
28Life is not empty:
29there is kindness, there is the apple, there is faith.
31as long as the poppy exists, one must live.
32There is something in my heart, like a thicket of light, like a dream at dawn,
33and I am so restless that I want
34to run to the end of the plain, go to the mountain's summit.
35In the distances is a voice calling me.’
