THE GREEN EXPANSE · POEM 8 OF 25
The Fishes' Message
English translation draft, awaiting review.
01I had gone to the pool,
02to see perhaps the image of my solitude in the water.
03There was no water in the pool.
04The fishes said:
05‘It is no fault of the trees.
06It was summer's sultry noon.
07The bright son of water sat upon the pool's rim,
08and the eagle of the sun came and carried him off into the air, away.
09We found no way to understand water's oxygen.
10The gleam left our scales, gone.
11But that great light,
12the image of that red carnation in water,
13whose heart, if a wind came, beat behind the folds of heedlessness,
14was our eye.
15It was an opening to the acknowledgment of paradise.
16If you saw God in the garden's throbbing, make an effort,
17and say the fishes' pool has no water.’
18The wind went to visit the plane tree.
19I went to visit God.
