01

By seeing I swear,

02

and by the beginning of speech,

03

and by the pigeon's flight from the mind,

04

a word is in a cage.

05

My words were bright as a patch of grass.

06

I told them:

07

there is a sun at your threshold,

08

which, if you open the door, shines upon your conduct.

09

And I told them:

10

stone is no ornament of the mountains,

11

just as metal is no adornment upon the pickax's body.

12

In the earth's palm is an unseen jewel,

13

whose radiance dazzled all the messengers.

14

Seek the jewel.

15

Take moments to the pasture of the mission.

16

And I gave them glad tidings of the messenger's footsteps,

17

and of the nearness of day, and of the increase of color,

18

of the rose's resonance behind the hedge of harsh words.

19

And I told them:

20

whoever sees a garden in wood's memory,

21

their face will remain in the blowing of the thicket of eternal ardor.

22

Whoever befriends the bird of air,

23

their sleep will be the world's most tranquil sleep.

24

The one who gathers light from time's fingertip,

25

with a sigh unties the windows' knot.

26

We were beneath a willow.

27

I picked a leaf from the branch above my head, said:

28

let us open our eyes: do you want a better sign than this?

29

I heard them saying to each other:

30

he knows magic, magic!

31

On every mountain they saw a messenger,

32

brought a cloud of denial upon their shoulders.

33

We sent down the wind,

34

to take the hats from their heads.

35

Their houses were full of chrysanthemums.

36

We closed their eyes.

37

We did not let their hands reach the tip of awareness's branch.

38

We filled their pockets with habit.

39

We disturbed their sleep with the sound of mirrors traveling.
