01

Where are my shoes?

02

Who was it who called: Sohrab?

03

The voice was familiar, like air to a leaf's body.

04

My mother is asleep.

05

And Manuchehr and Parvaneh, and perhaps all the city's people.

06

The Khordad night passes over the heads of seconds as calmly as an elegy,

07

and a cool breeze from the blanket's green margin sweeps my sleep away.

08

The scent of migration comes:

09

my pillow is full of the song of swallows' wings.

10

Morning will come,

11

and into this bowl of water

12

the sky will migrate.

13

I must go tonight.

14

I, who spoke with the people of this region from the widest-open window,

15

heard no word made of time.

16

No eye gazed lovingly at the earth.

17

No one was entranced by seeing a garden bed.

18

No one took a jackdaw upon a field seriously.

19

My heart grows heavy the size of a cloud,

20

when from the window I see Huri,

21

—the neighbor's grown daughter—

22

at the foot of the rarest elm on earth,

23

reading jurisprudence.

24

There are things too, moments full of heights:

25

(For instance, I saw a woman poet

26

so absorbed in gazing at space that in her eyes

27

the sky laid eggs.

28

And one night,

29

a man asked me:

30

how many hours' journey until the grape's sunrise?)

31

I must go tonight.

32

I must take a suitcase with room the size of my shirt of solitude,

33

lift it,

34

and go in a direction

35

where epic trees are visible,

36

toward that wordless expanse that always calls me.

37

Where are my shoes?
