Why this project exists

Purpose · هدف این پروژه

هدف این پروژه، فراهم کردن راهی برای خواندن شاهنامه در کنار ترجمهٔ انگلیسی و نزدیک‌تر کردن نسل‌های فارسی‌زبان و انگلیسی‌زبان به میراث فردوسی است. خواننده‌ای که هنوز فارسی نمی‌خواند نیز باید بتواند شعر را بیت‌به‌بیت دنبال کند و با تصویرها و روایت شاعر همراه شود.

در این مرحله، متن فارسیِ برگرفته از گنجور با متن تصحیح جلال خالقی مطلق مقایسه می‌شود تا تفاوت‌ها روشن و بازبینی متن برای ادامهٔ کار دوزبانه آسان‌تر شود. متن فارسی و ترجمهٔ انگلیسیِ موجود در فایل‌های گنجور عیناً حفظ می‌شوند؛ متن خالقی مطلق، منبع جدید پروژه برای بررسی و مقابله است.

This project brings Ferdowsi’s Shahnameh to readers across languages and generations. By placing Persian verse alongside plain English, it helps readers who cannot yet read Farsi follow the poem couplet by couplet, in the poet’s own order.

The comparison brings the existing Ganjoor-based Persian text together with Jalal Khaleghi Motlagh’s critical edition, making textual differences visible for review as the bilingual project develops. The supplied Persian and English remain intact. The English shown with Ganjoor has not yet been revised to reflect differences in the Jalal Khaleghi text.

How to read the comparison

Ganjoor is the OLD version used in this project; Jalal Khaleghi is the NEW source version. These labels describe their roles in the project.

Only letters and numbers are compared. Spaces, punctuation, invisible formatting characters, and vowel marks do not count as differences. Displayed text retains the spacing in each stored transcription. Footnotes and reference numbers are excluded from the Jalal Khaleghi poem text.

Volume 1 contains 49 complete sections and 4619 Jalal Khaleghi couplets. The Jalal Khaleghi text is a scan-checked reading transcription; printed justification gaps and optional vocalization are not reproduced.

دربارهٔ مصحح شاهنامه

جلال خالقی مطلق · Jalal Khaleghi Motlagh

جلال خالقی مطلق (۱۳۱۶–۱۴۰۴) ادیب، زبان‌شناس، ایران‌شناس و شاهنامه‌پژوه ایرانی بود. بیش از پنجاه سال از زندگی خود را به مطالعه و پژوهش دربارهٔ شاهنامه و حماسه‌سرایی در ایران اختصاص داد و سال‌ها در دانشگاه هامبورگ به تدریس و پژوهش پرداخت.

تصحیح انتقادی شاهنامه، مهم‌ترین دستاورد پژوهشی او و از مراجع اصلی شاهنامه‌پژوهی است. دانشگاه هامبورگ در یادبود او، این اثر را نسخه‌ای مرجع در سطح جهانی توصیف کرده است. پژوهش‌های او در شناخت زبان و ادب فارسی و شیوهٔ تصحیح متون، برای پژوهشگران و دوستداران فرهنگ ایران جایگاهی ماندگار دارد.

در این پروژه، جلدهای شاهنامه به تصحیح او منبع متن جدید هستند و با متن موجود گنجور مقابله می‌شوند.

Jalal Khaleghi Motlagh

Jalal Khaleghi Motlagh was an Iranian literary scholar, linguist, Iranologist, and specialist in Ferdowsi’s Shahnameh. He devoted more than fifty years to studying the Shahnameh and Iran’s epic tradition, and taught and conducted research at the University of Hamburg.

His critical edition of the Shahnameh is his principal scholarly achievement and a major reference for researchers. The University of Hamburg’s memorial describes it as an internationally recognized reference edition. His work has made a lasting contribution to the study of Persian language and literature and to the editing of classical texts.

In this project, his edition supplies the new Persian source text for comparison with the existing Ganjoor text.

About the digital source

Ganjoor · گنجور

Ganjoor is an online collection of Persian poetry, bringing the work of generations of poets within reach of readers around the world. Its collection draws on the efforts of earlier digitization projects, software collections, and websites, with those contributions documented on its sources page.

Ganjoor also makes poetry data available for others to build upon, supporting wider access to Persian literature through independent tools and applications. In this project, the supplied Ganjoor TXT files provide the existing Persian text together with the supplied English translations; both are preserved exactly during conversion.

گنجور

گنجور مجموعه‌ای برخط از شعر فارسی است که آثار نسل‌های گوناگون شاعران را در دسترس خوانندگان سراسر جهان قرار می‌دهد. این مجموعه از کوشش‌های پیشین در دیجیتالی‌کردن متون، مجموعه‌های نرم‌افزاری و وب‌سایت‌ها بهره گرفته است؛ سهم این منابع در صفحهٔ منابع گنجور معرفی شده است.

گنجور داده‌های شعر را نیز در اختیار دیگران می‌گذارد تا ابزارها و برنامه‌های مستقلی برای دسترسی گسترده‌تر به ادبیات فارسی ساخته شوند. در این پروژه، فایل‌های متنیِ ارائه‌شدهٔ گنجور، متن فارسیِ موجود و ترجمه‌های انگلیسیِ همراه آن را در بر دارند؛ هر دو هنگام تبدیل عیناً حفظ می‌شوند.

About the translator & project creator

Yahya Nazer, PhD · یحیی ناظر

Yahya Nazer, PhD, grew up in Iran, where he learned to read from the classic first-grade reader that generations of Iranian children remember, and where the poems of Rumi, Saadi and Hafez were part of everyday speech. Decades later, living in North America with grandchildren who speak English first, he began translating the classical Persian poets so that a reader who cannot yet read Farsi can still follow the original, line by line.

The result is more than sixty bilingual volumes — Rumi's Divan-e Shams, Saadi, Hafez, Attar, Khayyam and Ferdowsi's Shahnameh — each with the Persian couplet followed immediately by its English translation. The Persian is kept exactly as it stands; the English is plain and faithful rather than ornamental, so the poet's images arrive in his own order.

Every book is delivered as EPUB and PDF, to read on iPhone, iPad, Mac, Windows or Android. Yahya trained as an engineer and spent his career in industrial automation before turning to books full time. This work is done so my grandchildren Nova and Linden one day read them.

یحیی ناظر، دکتری

یحیی ناظر در ایران بزرگ شد؛ جایی که خواندن را با کتاب آشنای فارسیِ کلاس اول آموخت، همان کتابی که نسل‌های بسیاری از کودکان ایرانی به یاد دارند، و شعرهای مولانا، سعدی و حافظ بخشی از گفت‌وگوی روزمره بود. دهه‌ها بعد، در آمریکای شمالی، با نوه‌هایی که زبان نخستشان انگلیسی است، ترجمهٔ شاعران کلاسیک فارسی را آغاز کرد تا خواننده‌ای که هنوز فارسی نمی‌خواند نیز بتواند متن اصلی را سطر به سطر دنبال کند.

حاصل این کار بیش از شصت جلد کتاب دوزبانه از آثار مولانا، از جمله دیوان شمس، سعدی، حافظ، عطار، خیام و شاهنامهٔ فردوسی است. در هر کتاب، ترجمهٔ انگلیسی بلافاصله پس از بیت فارسی می‌آید. متن فارسی عیناً حفظ می‌شود و ترجمهٔ انگلیسی ساده و وفادار است تا تصویرهای شاعر با همان ترتیب اصلی به خواننده برسد.

همهٔ کتاب‌ها در قالب‌های EPUB و PDF ارائه می‌شوند و روی آیفون، آیپد، مک، ویندوز و اندروید قابل خواندن‌اند. یحیی در رشتهٔ مهندسی تحصیل کرده و پیش از پرداختن تمام‌وقت به کتاب‌ها، سال‌ها در زمینهٔ اتوماسیون صنعتی فعالیت داشته است. این کار را انجام می‌دهم تا نوه‌هایم، نوا و لیندن، روزی این کتاب‌ها را بخوانند.
